Running Deficit

Politicians talk of 'trust deficit', which is their way of saying the opponent has to go.  This 'trust deficit' business is the current hot topic in Karnataka now, with Mr. Yediyurappa upping the ante one more time.. these nataks would continue to go on..

I am talking about a different kind of deficit that pertains to my running and the gap between my goal and actuals.

Early this year as the Comrades was starring at me, I quietly increased my weekly mileage to 60k a week (3120k for the year), hoping that would help me with the hills of Durban.  I kept to this increased target till about Boston Marathon and things went downhill from there.  At the end of 1H, I am down by 185k or about 12% of my target.

This running deficit bugs me and I need to do something about it.  I thought of few options and need your help in sorting this out..

  1. Reset to 50k a week - This would be easiest and put me back on 'target' for the year and may even leave a small surplus as cushion for future defaults.
  2. Run daily - At my current running mileage of 10k per day, it would take 160+ days to kill the deficit, which is almost till the end of the year.
  3. Run 70k a week - This again would take 18+ weeks to neutralize deficit but the silver lining is that don't have to run daily as in #2
  4. Run with Bala - This was suggested by Karthik and perhaps the surest way to get rid off the deficit sooner.  But, Bala has moved on to different league now and I wouldn't be able to keep up with him.

Your suggestion please..

  3. I'd do for your famous philosophy of 50k a week with running without a gap of more than a day. Conservative is always better than aggressive, even more since you have a road map and also a buffer built-in chief. But yes, also not at the cost of any dreadful injuries. Here's to injury-free great-mileage 2H running Ram.

  5. I agree with Naveen and George for a conservative 50K a week, which you will easily achieve with two days rest in a week and a Half+ on Sat/Sun. This is assuming that your only goal is yearly cumulative, and have no plans for a training for a full or Ultra!

  6. Thanks guys.. I will try to stay at 60k a week and not kill myself to bridge the deficit.. At the same time it is critical to avoid injuries as Naveen says..

    Thanks once again team
