It was a wonderful feeling to ride in an Auto where the meter really worked and the driver was polite and courteous. If you closely observe the photo, the rate is INR 6 per km and the driver didn't ask for a penny more. I was so overwhelmed that I had to pinch myself.. that's when I realized I was in Bangalore and NOT in Chennai.
Since coming back to Chennai, I have used Autos a few times several times and those interactions have brought me to the ground. From no meter to getting ridiculed, all is part of parcel engaging Autos in Chennai. In Chennai the going rate is INR 10 per km and that is if you know the city and know the approximate distance.
Why is this tradition continuing?
