Murugan Idli Kadai

Murugan Idli Kadai

We went out to have Thai food but ended up at Murugan Idli Kadai (MIK) on GN Chetty Road. It was because the Benjurong Thai restaurant was closed on Sunday evening. Go figure!!!!

MIK chain is a recent entrant to Chennai restaurant scene and already has 3 or 4 outlets in the city. The place is small, cramped and noisy but very busy. We were led to the eating area in the first floor through narrow stairs hidden in the back. Since the food is also prepared upstairs, hotel staff keep running up and down with their hands full. If one is not careful, the scurrying staff will run over you.

The dining area was bare and devoid of any decoration but was reasonably clean. There is no menu card and the choices are limited anyway. Just Idli, Dosai, Uttappam, Vada & two varieties of Pongal. You just look up the board and order your stuff.

Like in the marriage dinning, banana leaf is first placed and all our orders were served on that. Our food was served hot and quickly with 4 varieties of chutneys and sambhar. Interestingly, you have to pay extra for the Milakap Podi.

MIK pricing is nominal and much cheaper than Hotel Saravana Bhavan.

Service C
Food B+
Ambience C

Overall rating B

Bottom line: If you love pure vegetarian, Tamil food and don't mind the ambience and the service, then Murugan Idli Kadai is a must dine eatery. You will get value for money and time.

MIK is now successfully spreading its wings in Chennai. If the crowds are any indicator.. they are certainly doing well
