Bloggers finger Indra Nooyi

Bloggers finger Indra Nooyi

I read an interesting article in business line that talked about the power of blogs and the need to react fast to what’s been said or written about organizations (and individuals). What raised my curiosity was the fact that this article talked about Indra Nooyi, President & CFO of PepsiCo, who is originally from Chennai. So, I started digging around to get more juice on the purported speech of Indira Nooyi that landed her in trouble.

Ms. Nooyi delivered a commencement speech to the graduating class of 2005 at the Columbia University Business School on May 15, 2005 in New York. In her speech, she compared the 5 continents (excluding Australia & Antarctica) to the five fingers of our hand and went on to say that US (and not North America) is like the middle finger. She also talked about how US is perceived by the rest of the world as giving its middle finger rather than a helping hand.

This speech created a storm of posts in the Blogosphere and most of them were highly critical. When I Googled on this subject, it brought over 15,000 links. To quote from just one of the post “That's bull. If the rest of the world chooses not to see America for what it truly is, the fault is not with us.” In other words, the problem is with the rest of the world, according to this blogger.

I read the whole text of her address. While I understand the crux of the overall message, I do wish she had used a different analogy to drive home the message. It may be that she wanted to be provocative, but it sorely misfired on her. Ms. Nooyi acknowledged as much in her apology statement when she says “Over the years I’ve witnessed and advised others how a thoughtless gesture or comment can hurt good, caring people. Regrettably, I’ve proven my own point. Please accept my sincere apologies.

In her speech and the subsequent statement and apology, she went out of her way to state her loyalty and love for USA. Why do you think she did that? Is it because she is a first generation immigrant and happens to be brown in color?

Here are my questions:

  1. Do you believe her commencement address was in bad taste and out of place?
  2. Do you believe she was fingered by some bloggers because of Ms. Nooyi’s color?
  3. What do you think would have been the reaction of the same bloggers if an identical speech was delivered by say, Meg Whitman or Carly Fiorina?

  1. Hi! First time here.
Her commencement address was definitely in bad taste. It was blown out of proportion by the Blogosphere...partly due to bad PR from pepsi (since they didn't release the extract of the speech on time). Given the close watch which the blogosphere maintains on currents all business leaders need to be more careful. If the same speech was delivered by some American then it might not have become such a big controversy.

  2. First my congratulations to you for a wonderful post.

    a) IMHO its wrong to talk about Middle finger etc. I never thought it is a big deal until I came to the US. It is even worse than calling someone a 'Bastard'. To that extent I feel she is too naive.

    b) I bet Meg/Carly, would have chosen their words. We know how people play with words here.! I don't think color played a role.

    c) Was it a prepared speech. How did she miss this...

Yes, I agree with you that the analogy was in bad taste and the slow reaction by Pepsi PR department didn't help the matter either.

    Thanks..
It must have been a prepared speech as this was the main thrust her commencement address. This smart lady who is generally very good public speaker / motivator somehow missed the boat on this one big time.

  4. Visu it is a good article about Indra Nooyi.
People do mistakes, i feel that she had compared US to a higher order to other continents. She didn't mean it in other angle.
This has become an big issue because she is a woman and her color.
Her Apology ,This tells u about that person. I really feel what she has done is right thing.
