Do you know where is Timbuktu? I didn't, though have used it many conversations to refer to 'in the middle of nowhere'.
This article and little bit of a digging around the net tells me that, Timbuktu is a city in Mali and is home to over 31,000 people. Wonder how they feel about their city name is being used to refer to 'in the middle of nowhere..'
If they're in the 'middle of nowhere,' then they probably do not know of this pejorative moniker for their city.
