Can't figure this one out

Came to know of this site from my colleague at work today. I am completely stumped by this.. This seems to read your mind. Obviously there is some trick to this.. But can't figure it out..

Can you figure this one out ?

  1. Dear Ram,

The trick I believe is, when you add the two digits of a two digit number and subtract the sum from the original two digit number, the end product will be a multiple of nine.

    e.g.

    23: 2 + 3 = 5, 23 - 5 =18
    77: 7 + 7 = 14, 77 - 14 = 63

If you take a closer look, the numbers 0,9,18,27,36,45,54,63,72,81,90 will have the same symbols. To add to the trick, number 99 may have a different symbol, because 99 is not reachable.
Further, the symbol changes every other time you try.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Exactly Harish, all multiples of 9 have the same symbol. Any two digit number less its sum of digits give a multiple of 9. And every time the symbol changes for the multiples of 9 to fool the user.

    Yes.. you are absolutely correct..

After I started it for some more time, it dawned on me.

The change of symbols an interesting ploy to divert your attention..
