(Another) Wakeup call from Manipur

Manipur has been in the news for a while. The issue on-hand is quite tragic and has immense potential to cause great havoc. But, for some strange reason, North East doesn't quite get the attention it deserves. Both the Government of India and the Fourth estate have been giving step motherly treatment of this fertile region with huge potential.

I believe, North Eastern states of India (Assam, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim, Meghalaya & Nagaland) deserves lot more attention than it gets now.

1 - More representation in the federal government
2- More links - Rail & Air
3- More cultural representation
4- More tourism promotion and link
5- More central funds and investment

Simply the NE needs MORE of everything..

Here is my abbreviated 'letters to editior' published on The Hindu on 8/18/2004

Manipur situation
Sir, — What started off as protests over the death of Manorama Devi in Manipur have spiralled into a Statewide expression of anger and distrust. In a State where people felt they were not getting enough attention from the Centre, the incident added fuel to fire. The Centre should have acted swiftly and impartially to contain the fallout.

On the other hand, the Centre finds itself mired in its own contradictions vis-à-vis the Prevention of Terrorism Act and the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act. While it is looking at repealing POTA, it wants to retain AFSPA.
